Why yes! I am still making art for my little corner of the world. I share this space with my dining room so I had a question to ask myself. Do I hide the fact that it’s my craft and office station or do I just own it?
I decided to own it. Why not?! It’s what I love to do. Why try and hide it.
I have always wanted to try pallet art. I love the way it looks. However, I really didn’t know where to actually get a pallet. I see them everywhere but I would feel so bad if I couldn’t ask someone if I could have it. Usually people aren’t just hanging out by their pallets. What if they needed it later?! I know such internal conflict.
So I just went the safe route and went to Home Depot and recreated it. The other part of creating a pallet is I don’t have that many tools at my disposal. So I knew the wood I had to find had to already be cut and ready.
I was in luck because I found these babies.
Materials:
6 – Poplar Hobby Board 0.25 x 3.5 x 2ft
2 – Poplar Hobby Board 0.25 x 2.5 x 2ft
Wood Glue
Wood Stain ( I used Varathane Wood Stain in Dark Walnut)
Vinyl
Gold Paint ( I used Martha Stewart Metallic Gold Pearl)
Using wood glue – glue the 6 planks together.
The glue could get drippy so make sure to wipe it clean on the side that will be the front of your artwork.
Glue the two smaller pieces of the wood for extra support.
I had to use my saw here. Had I just bought one more board I could of got away without having to use any tools.
Now your pallet is done! Super easy right? I know. I think I put off pallet arts because I thought it looked too hard.
Now you need to stain the pallet.
I used a small foam roller and rolled on the stain. Let it dry.
Using the Silhouette I made a stencil for the word create. All I did was weld the font I wanted together. Super easy. Use a piece of vinyl to create the stencil.
The hardest part for me was getting the vinyl to lay right on the wood. You don’t want any bubbles!
Then using a sponge I pounced the paint on the stencil. I don’t have a picture of this actually going down. #fail. I used this awesome paint from the Martha Living line.
I seriously love this paint. I found it at Home Depot and the color is Golden Pearl. It adds a pretty metallic look without being to0 gaudy.
I let my stencil dry. Then carefully pulled the stencil off the pallet.
I used a sand sponge to give it a rougher look.
Once my pallet was done I knew I wanted to make something to hang on it. I absolutely fell in love with this wreath from The Red Thread. I followed her tutorial exactly.
I thought this would be a perfect time saver project using the Silhouette so I made my own leaves in the Silhouette Studio.
I used some left over cardboard from a recent IKEA trip, a stapler, and raided my paper stash. I sat on the couch and stapled leaves to a wreath while catching up on some shows. I love craft nights.
I hung the wreath in the middle of my pallet and I was done! What I love about this is if I change my mind (which happens a lot) and want something different I can change it out.
I was so in love with my new paper wreath I had to make another one. So I made this fall one to put above my fire place.
I could seriously make a wreath for every occasion now.

Thanks Stephanie! 🙂
Stopping over from the Silhouette Challenge!
I’m envious of your ability to combine various mediums to create such an adorable piece of art. The 3D takes it to a whole new level. Kudos!
Much Love,
Trisha D.
Thanks Trisha! I like the fact I can change it out when I want something new:)
Love your project!
Thanks Glenna!
OMG!! I love this! I also love that you can change the wreaths out! Great job!
Thanks Tanya! That’s my favorite part too! I am always switching up things!
This is beautiful! And I LOVE that you can change out the wreath!! And I never would have known this wasn’t a pallet if you hadn’t told us. The dark stain that you used is lovely! I am totally with you on the pallet thing, though…I see them EVERYWHERE behind stores by dumpsters, but don’t have the guts to just take them. Luckily I found out that a family friend that builds houses always has tons of them and even offered to deliver them to me (!), so when I have a little more time and space I’m excited to try out a few pallet creations 🙂 If you were close to central PA, I’d gladly share pallets with you!
You got the hook up girl!!! Even delivery! wow. 🙂 I am glad I am not alone on feeling bad to jack someone’s pallet haha:) Thanks so much Meredith!
That is awesome! I know, I can never find pallets, either. But good job improvising!
Thanks Carrie!
I work for a pallet company in Oregon. Most major cities will have pallet companies in them and even some of the smaller ones do too. Can usually find them listed online. You can do a search on this website to find one near you. http://www.palletcentral.com/nwpca-directories/palletcontainer-companies .
Another tip for finding pallets is by checking with grocery stores or businesses who do alot of shipping. If they cant give/sell you one they could lead you to who there supplier is. Also another option is craigslist. You can often find pallets listed there.
Love the pallet art. We are always making items for our home from pallet wood. Its great to see others doing so as well.
Thanks Angi for all those helpful tips and the website info! I will be checking that out. I never even thought of craigslist!
Thanks!!
I love that wreath and might just might need to make one for myself! Great job on this!!
Thanks Randi! The wreath is really easy to make especially when you use the Silhouette. It’s one of those easy couch crafts (craft you can do on the couch! 🙂 )
Absolutely beautiful and so versatile! Congrats on the Silhouette design team spot, can’t wait to see all your projects!
Thanks Vanessa! I can’t wait to start! I hope to make all the Silhouette gals proud!
I love love love that paper leaf wreath!!
Thanks Shana! I love them too! I can see myself making these all the time now. They are quick to make!
So cute!! And I love how you made the boards look like a pallet, I think I may need to give that a try! – Dee @ From Wine to Whine
It is really easy to do Dee! I always shyed away from attempting pallet art just because 1. never could find a pallet 2. not too many tools at my disposal! So building one with wood glue was about as easy as it gets! 😉 It’s also pretty light so I could hang it on the wall without any trouble!
This is one of the most artistic and eye-catching pallet pieces I have ever seen, Tori! (Oh, and when I was craftgawker earlier and spied it, I hearted it, smiled, and thought, “I know the creator of that masterpiece.” Seriously, it was a proud moment for me. Lol.) I just love the combination of dark stained wood, metallic paint, and pastel papers. The 3D effect of the wreath is incredible. Okay, that’s that. I’ve gotta share this on my FB page tomorrow afternoon. Thanks for the inspiration!
Awh:) Your comment just made my day! You are so sweet.
Haha! I saw your project on Craftgawker too and hearted it! We are neighbors on CG today:) lol.
Thanks so much for sharing my wreath!! 🙂
I adore both versions of your wreath.and the pallet art is the perfect backdrop!
Thanks so much Pam! I see myself using that pallet in a lot of backdrops for photos!
Hi Tori, found your blog thru Whimsy Wednesday party – LOVE this little wreath, thanks for tutorial. There are a lot of lovely paper patterns out there for all occasions!
Thanks JoAnn! Oh I know! I can only imagine the possibilities!
I love this project! We might be moving soon and I totally want to do something like this in our new house!
Thanks! Send me a picture if you do! I want to see!
This is so cute!! I love it!! Time to drag out the Silhouette machine!! You did a great job! Thanks for inspiring! 🙂
Thanks Janice! I love that machine!
This is really pretty! Great job!
Thanks for linking up to this week’s Catch a Glimpse Party. I’ll be featuring this tomorrow! 🙂
Thanks Allison!!
This is so beautiful! I love it 🙂
Thanks Jenn!
I love pallet art but I am never motivated enough to actually tear one apart, this looks amazing! And I love your leaf wreath especially the colors. I should give this a try. Thanks for the inspiration. I am visiting from The 36th Ave link party. Come check out my blog if you get a chance http://thecoloreddoor.blogspot.com/. Thanks Tammy
Yes! It was so easy!! Glad you stopped by! I am off to check out your blog now!
What was the font you used to create the word “create” and weld together? I love this project and am doing a version my own and can’t seem to fall in love with a font other than yours haha but I am using a different word.
Hi Tracy!! I used Mission Script from Losttype.com.
I just sent off your tutorial to my daughter so she has a nice project this summer to do with her daughter! My grand is 9 and very artistic and her mother is very handy with wood and building materials. She has been reconstructing her home with adding and changing walls and tiling floors and such. This is perfect for them! Truth be told, I’m redoing our home with a beach theme since we live on a bay that has lots of agates and driftwood and shells. One of the many oyster farmers has pallets stacked in the back for free. I will be doing your pallet idea with a beach theme for our living room. Thank you so much for sharing such a NICE project!
