How to make your own paper roses | Lil Mrs. Tori

Hi Friends!!

I have a craft party coming up in a couple of weeks. I am really excited about it and have been thinking of what my theme of the party will be. I knew I wanted flowers in mason jars. If you know me that is my go to decoration for any party. Knowing I would rather budget for food than flowers I set out to find out how I could make my own  paper flowers. I was searching Lia Griffith’s site and found her tutorial on how to make your own paper roses. If you have yet to see her site, go now. It’s totally drool worthy with gorgeous pictures of her home decor and paper projects.

She has an easy to follow tutorial on how to make these flowers and even offers a PDF file to download. I knew I didn’t want to spend the afternoon cutting out flowers when I have a machine that would do that for me. So I made her template into a Silhouette Studio cut file. Whoohoo. It cut my time in half and I couldn’t just keep this gem of a cut file to myself.

So I emailed Lia and asked her if it was o.k. if I shared my cut file of her template with my awesome Silhouette friends. Guess what…she said yes!!! Whoohoo x 2!!!! She was so super nice about it too!

So my friends if you would like to have your own paper roses file download it here:

Then head over to Lia Griffith’s website to follow her step by step tutorial on how to put these flowers together. If you do end up using the cut file leave her a little comment that says thank you!! She totally didn’t have to say yes for me to share. I think it is really cool she did!

If you do not have a Silhouette and want to cut these out by hand then head straight to her tutorial!! Lia has a PDF file for download there along with instructions.

Tips that helped me along the way….

I experimented with all kinds of paper. I tried glitter paper…

Honestly, I didn’t like the glitter paper. It was hard to curl and it was white on the other side. I preferred the colors to be the same on both sides of the paper. Although, I do like the St. Patrick’s day look I have going on here. This would make a great centerpiece for your St. Patty’s day party!

I also tried card stock. It was still pretty thick and my hand did start to hurt trying to give it that curled edge. It also has a thicker look to it.  That doesn’t make for a natural looking flower.

Vellum Paper Roses | Lil Mrs. Tori

Last up, I used vellum. This hands down was my favorite paper to use!!!! It’s light and a little translucent. It looks amazing in the light and the paper was so thin that it pretty much curled on it’s own. I will be making my centerpieces from vellum for my party! It’s just so pretty. I also tried regular printer paper. I did like the result and it curled itself as well! It just didn’t pop like the vellum did. Moral of the story, I would choose a very thin paper if you are going to make these roses. It will save your hands during the curling process!

As for my leaves I actually used real leaves from a bouquet I received. I liked the look better. If I didn’t have that bouquet I would of probably just yanked some off my bushes outside. That is what will end up happening the day of the party.

Another tip is when I skewered on the rose body, I actually cut a small slit at the top of the cone. I had a really thin wire and they did not skewer as well as I hoped. If your not sure what I am talking about check out Lia’s instructions.

I just love how the turned out. I also love that I have a forever bouquet to look at then one that only lasts a week or two.

I can’t wait to show you all the projects I have lined up for this craft party. This is just the first of many to come! Follow me on Facebook or Instagram if you don’t want to miss a project!! It’s going to be good!
