Good Morning!
Decorating for Thanksgiving is in full swing over here. My parents are coming in soon and we always have an early Thanksgiving. We also end up having Thanksgiving on the day too. So we end up with 2 Thanksgivings. No one complains! 🙂
This weekend I wanted to spruce up my decor and I made this Give Thanks wooden sign to hang under my fantle (fake mantle).
It was really easy and you can make your own easily!
Materials:
Craft Plywood (found at my local craft shop)
Wood Stain – I used:
Rust-Oleum 211730 Premium Wood Stains, Dark Walnut
Gold Paint – I used Martha Stewart Living Golden Pearl Specialty Paint
Cream Paint – I used:
Martha Stewart 32033 2-Ounce Acrylic Satin Paint, Porcelain Doll
Gold Confetti
Glue
Circle Foam Brushes
Silhouette Design – Give Thanks / Laurel
First – Download the designs. They look like this.
In the design studio I un-grouped the laurel and separated them so they would cut out in two pieces.
Prep your board. Sand it and stain it. I let mine dry overnight.
Usually I would of done the stencil in vinyl. However, it just wasn’t working for me that day. See it all balled up in the corner of the first pic? Yes. I was having a bad day with vinyl. So I used card stock instead. The yellow part is vinyl so it was done half in card stock half in vinyl. I carefully pounced the gold on the wood.
I used Martha Stewart Porcelain Doll for my laurel.
The confetti was an after thought but I love it! I just placed some glue around my board and added my confetti. Done!
The board is so light that I was able to hang it up with two Velcro command strips.
See how the confetti shines!
I love how it turned out! Have you tried any Thanksgiving art? I would love to see it!!

Hi Tori,
You have a very pretty blog! I just wanted to let you know that I’ve just followed you on twitter, pinterest and facebook 🙂 Don’t think i’m a stalker! I was just going through my list of subscribers and wanted to connect.
Love this tutorial by the way!
Marianne: Design Your Own (lovely) Blog
Thanks Marianne! Totally not stalking cause I stalk yours too. I just love your blog. You have taught me so many tips and tricks. Canva and Unsplash (my favorite two) I have used so many times and all found because of your blog! Thanks for stopping by Marianne. 🙂
Glad I’m not the only one lol 😉 But I’m glad you’ve found some cool stuff there!
SO pretty! I love the gold paint, and the confetti is such a great touch! We are moving the day after Thanksgiving, so no real Thanksgiving decor around here 🙁 But I am pinning for next year!
Thanks Meredith! Awh:( That was me last year! I had nothing up for Thanksgiving but a wreath that I pulled out of a moving box a few days before. I hope you have a smooth and easy move!! I know that can be so stressful.
Ooh, I love it! Pinned and shared!
Tori – this is really awesome!
Thanks Marni!! 😉
Love it so much! I’ve pinned it and shared…if I wasn’t in the middle of a move, I’d be making one right now!
Thanks Lisa!! I hope your move is going smoothly!
Okay, first of all, “fantle” is now my new favorite word. Also, this turned out AMAZINGLY! I love the deep wood stain and the give thanks font; plus, the touch of the confetti is brilliant. (A great reminder that I need to use that pick-me-up tool.) Gold stars all around! (And this is totally getting me excited about Thanksgiving…eek!)
Haha. Thanks Lauren! I can’t claim Fantle one of my bloggy friends made it up last year and now I totally use it! The pick-me-up tool is amazing. I find myself using it all the time!!
Tori, this is gorgeous…I absolutely LOVE IT!
Thank you Marilyn!
Hello gorgeous sign! What a show stopper! If I hadn’t already planned out my mantel I would totally do this! I love everything about it… the simplicity and the styling are perfect!
Thanks Lisa! It was so simple to make! It’s my favorite piece this fall!!
Your sign is beautiful! I love the gold paint for a little metallic shine. I’ve been having a heck of a time with vinyl lately, so I understand! 😉
I found you on I Heart Naptime’s Linky Party.
Oh I am so glad I am not the only one!! I was starting to think there was something wrong with me! haha:) Thanks for such a sweet comment and stopping by!
This is such a beautiful sign! 🙂
Thanks Megan!
Beautiful Sign. What an awesome idea!
Thanks Michelle! I am now sign crazy! It has been my favorite craft to make lately. 🙂
Absolutely adore this. Pinning!
Thanks Val!!
This is, quite honestly, the absolute best Thanksgiving sign I have ever seen. This post is why I’m your newest follower — I can’t wait to see what else you have done!
Thank you so much Jess! I am off to check out your site now! Thanks for dropping by.
Hi Tori!
I came over via Huckleberry Love, I wanted to see if you would share the size of the craft plywood you used, and possibly the sizes of the images that you cut out.. this is a GREAT piece!! Thanks so much!!!
Thanks so much Camey! Sure, my plywood measures 24 x 12. I found it in the wood section of Joann’s. I don’t have the exact measurement from my cut. Thanks for pointing that out and something I will put in my future posts. The Give Thanks measures roughly 8 x 10 and the laurels are 9 x 3. I hope that helps!
I LOVE THIS. I think the confetti is my favorite part, though really everything about this is amazing.
Thanks Amy! It’s my favorite part about it too! Maybe it is because we love metallic so much?!
Hi Tori,
Love this!! Do you you have to have a silhouette cameo to do this?
Hi Crystal! No, you don’t have to use the cameo. You would just need a way to make or buy the stencil. There is always the option to buy alphabet stencils or some people even make there own with printer paper/xacto knife…like this: http://www.allthingsthrifty.com/2010/03/tutorial-making-stencil.html
I’m excited to make this! How big is your sign?
I would love to see it when you finish!!! I used this board from Joann’s http://www.joann.com/plywood-sheet-12inx24inx1%2F8in/10177640.html#start=55&sz=54
I love this! I pinned your post and just finished my version of this. Thanks for the inspiration!
Thanks Lindy! I would love to see your version!! If you think of it snap a pic and send it to Tori@lilmrstori.com 🙂
Hi! This project turned out so beautifully! Good job! I’m wondering if you had any problems painting latex paint over oil-based stain? Or is that not what you did? I’m attempting a project that is similar, but everything I’ve read says you can’t paint over oil-based stain… So just wondering what your experiencewith this was? Thanks for your help!
Hi Breanna, The Martha Stewart gold paint from Home Depot says that it is a water-based paint. I didn’t experience any problems with that paint. I am not sure how a latex paint would do! You could always try a test patch on the back of your board or on a separate piece. 🙂
This is so gorgeous! I was wondering of there is a special printer needed for the two designs? I would love to work on this project but can’t think how to get those designs already punched out after I download them. Thank you for your feedback 🙂
I LOVE this post! And, am excited to make my own sign. By the way, the images for this post seem to be broken. thanks for sharing!
Will you please share the name of the font you used? Great sign!
Thanks! It is actually a Silhouette Cut file from the Silhouette store. http://www.silhouetteonlinestore.com/?page=view-shape&id=50426
