It’s Silhouette Challenge Day! The theme this time around was Fabric and Apparel and there is a ton of inspiration from my fellow bloggers at the bottom of this post, so be sure you check that and an amazing giveaway out.  You all know that I love a good kid shirt! Ryan turns four in May and I thought I would get a head start on his birthday shirt. The boy is really into dinosaurs and he wants a dinosaur themed birthday this year. I wanted to make a fun shirt for him and drew this dinosaur for him in Illustrator.  I plan to make a lot of stuff for his birthday around this fun dinosaur and I think I might just create some invites using these photos and this dinosaur.

If you want to make a fun dino shirt of your own the .Studio file is below.

Other materials you will need:

  • T-shirt
  • Silhouette
  • Vinyl in your choice of color

I really do love making t shirts for my boys (and friends!) and it is really easy to do. First, you want to start with some good heat transfer vinyl (HTV).  Pro World, Inc shipped me a few colors of their HTV to try. I actually love that their vinyl comes in yards (for a great price)! One roll can last me for a while and I have the option to cut it to size.  I used this Siserweed Easyweed Vinyl in black.

I like to lay out all  my colors options for the design. I had to really decide on color and landed with black and white. I think it makes this sketchy dinosaur look cooler. 😉 I then lay out my shirt and measure it to decide what size I need to make the design in the Silhouette Studio.

Once I decided on a size, I make sure to mirror or flip my image so that my design is not backwards! To do that just go to Object >> Mirror >> Flip Horizontally. You should be all good now and won’t waste any precious HTV on a design that was cut wrong. 🙂 Make sure to load the HTV in your Silhouette with the shiny side facing down. You can choose to cut it with or without a mat. I like to cut with a mat but I go both ways.

Your cut file won’t come with the words “Ryan is Four”. 😉 I figure you might want to put something else but if you do like that font it is KG Two is Better than One.

Once your dino design has been cut you will need to weed it using your hook tool. The photo above shows all the detail that needs to be “weeded” out of your design. This particular vinyl weeded really nice!

I then position the design on to my shirt – the way that I want it…

and I press..and press…and press. When I think I might have pressed enough…I press some more.  I then remove the shiny clear material off and press it again. I use a small piece of fabric between my iron and the design.  This black HTV really adhered nicely to the fabric. Be sure to enter the heat press giveaway below! That’s the best way to adhere HTV to fabric.

Done and now for some modeling photos…because he has quite the modeling skills…and a perfect pout.

Cutie. Hope you enjoyed my little shirt!
